whats to come in the new year?

Sunday was a fabulous Electra Socket show down at prism. SPIDER-MAN!!!. We all enjoy the antics of our hometown diva, no matter how many times I see her sometimes crude but horribly ORIGINAL drag comedy style I just can not get enough of her, I know she cares as much about our community as I do. ELECTRA YOU ARE ONE OF A KIND and WE LOVE YOU!!!

Well the New Year is upon us Girls, and Jaky's show is coming up this Sunday. I have been thinking of the perfect way to wrap up a great year in our drag community. What better than to do a BEST OF 2007 wrap up show in honor of all the queens who have cum and gone? I will be dedicating numbers and taking requests meet me at PRISM LOUNGE at 10:30 Sunday January 6 for the first show of 2008!!!!

6) KNOW YOUR LIGHTING

A fine line must be made between drag performance and camp. It is fun to be campy when time calls for this but a true understanding of the stage and how movement appears is critical. Par Can (parabolic reflector lamp in a canister), or nightclub stage lighting, is some of the harshest lights you will encounter in performance, these lights are the reason behind numerous movement and make-up do's and don’ts we will cover in posts. It is your job, take time to understand the lighting conditions of your venue and spend some time watching how it reacts to movement and find a balance. Determine where the Par Cans are in relation to your performance most of the time you will not get complete coverage. Your performance is directly effected by how these lights read. Some larger movements of the arms or head or specific poses, tilting the head back, can be greatly amplified, appearing garish if not done in the correct lighting. Smaller demure motions, specific to “Celebrity Impersonation” may be lost completely.

In closing many drag queens lose sight of the larger picture when it comes to performance, personality. The six basic rules we covered here may just save your career. Starting out with a basic understanding of how you are perceived is pivotal in developing stage presence but we can never forget who we are. Stage presence is the art of winning over a crowd with out a word. We should be able to use the resources provided to develop a sense of perception while remaining who we are as individuals.

Jakyllyn Hyde's the Christmas Spirit

Well kids, last night was fabulous.
For those who were not in attendance last night was "Jakyllyn Hyde's the Christmas Spirit" show (otherwise known as the annual Ho! Ho! Whoe! Show). Every year the local queens get together and put on a huge production show fundraiser to benefit the Victoria Pride Society. At the beginning of the month the show was going as planned and last minute four of the scheduled seven performers pulled out unexpectedly. AHHHHH!!!!.. Not to worry all we are talking the Jakyllyn Hyde here, I of course pulled up my big girl panties and stepped it into high gear to learned four new Christmas numbers just for the event.. The turn out was AMAZING and we raised quite a bit of money. We sold Cherry and Strawberry candy canes for one dollar each and even had large donations from the bar staff...
Thanks again to my fabulous team, Electra Socket, Toby Pierce, Bartender Terry and DJ extraordinaire Tin-Tin
Unfortunately my dear photographer and friend Lisa was not with us as she had previous Christmas plans, (we missed you hun) I will attempt to get pictures from the show and post in the future but for now here is the poster.

Kisses
until next time who loves jakyllyn hyde.

5) SHAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT!

Confidence in you product is probably the hardest roadblock to overcome when first starting out in the entertainment industry not just stage acting but all aspects of entertainment. Some times we do have to assume the best to proceed. If you think you are nobody it is assumed that the audience will agree, in turn if you think your performance sucked so does the audience. We are always looking to outside sources to judge our own opinions, it is human nature which is why we depend so much on journalistic editorial, and “professional” opinions. How you feel about the new spring line or blockbuster video picks is directly reflected by how other felt about he same subjects. We are no saying this is condoned but it is how you are judged as well a larger portion of an audiences opinion is how you react to them. If you get one audience member clapping and encourage the same from those around him/her soon everyone is clapping and you exit everyone assumes they enjoyed what the saw because the are clapping. Confidence is difficult but it will come in the beginning to make it in this business you must assume everyone is here, and wants to watch you.

Jackie Beat Sweeps America (no love for canada)

Drag Superstar and one of my personal idols Jackie Beat continues her annual standing room only Holiday Show tour, sweeping the nation in a whirlwind tour stops continue from Portland (December 2nd) and Los Angeles (December 7th-9th) tomorrow December 12th in San Diego California (Bourbon Street: 4612 Park Blvd.) and will continue on through New York from 13th- 16th (The Cutting Room: 19 W. 24th Street, $18) picking up in San Francisco three nights December 20th-22nd (Empire Plush Room: 940 Sutter Street). I love Jackie Beat her insane humor and live music are an inspiration that this medium does have lasting power when used correctly, she is a staff writer for numerous t.v. series, fronts her own band Dirty Sanchez and even lent her voice as Bertha in "Kung-Fu Spy Troll" on Nickelodeon (which i have never been able to find out much about, apparently it aired in early 2005). I LOVE YOU JACKIE (not me, although i do love me too)

The Boa Shows Turned 13

Jaky was in Vancouver over the Weekend and had the pleasure of attending the glamourous thirteen year anniversary of the (Feather) Boa Shows at the Odyssey Sunday December 9th... Congratulations go out to the hostesses Joan-E and Justine Tyme, and the best thing to happen to a drag show since the tape-deck DJ Jules. with special guest pure diva action all the way Ms. CoCo.

The history of these shows is as vast as the performers themselves..
It all began over twenty years earlier when a division of owners brought about a new club called the Odyssey on Howe Street in Vancouver B.C. from the get go the owners wanted a strong show with steady hosts that could keep the crowd coming back (who doesn't... LOL) Past hosts have included such immense talents as Empress XV & XX Myria Le Noir, and Empress XIX Willie Taylor, to Empress III Sandy St. Peters, but no one has had as much of a lasting impact as the current talents of Joan-E and Justine Tyme. It wasn't always easy said Joan-E as she bridged to a montage dedicated to the the past thirteen years she told of past attempts to keep hosts and the casting of future Empress' XXVIII Joan-E and XXX Diana Rose in 1994 followed by the coaxing of Calgary Glamour queen Justine Tyme in 1995. The drag community lost a mentor and friend in 2001 with Diana Rose but she would never be forgotten. The Feather Boa show did not replace their third host instead welcoming a third guest weekly, these guests have always ranged from the glamorously imperial to the hip and trashy. Regular talents including Carlotta Gurl, Willie Taylor and Vivian Von Brokenhymen, they have tested the hands of time and with hope together Joan-E and Justine will continue to entertain our Sunday nights for at least one more year. Congrats Girls and Good Luck into the New Year.

The Most Fabulous of Random Show Highlights

Well It's finally December and as promised I am bringing to you a follow up to my show last Sunday... a little late but I was worked to near death by this weekend I was working with a slight cold and the rain does not heed the weak of health i suppose... The Random Show was a great success thanks to the help of great performers we pulled it off..
a little story: this week was to originally be an Electra Socket show and she had decided to take the week to herself and rest.. (lest we forget she is the other half of the Victoria Drag scene lol) I strategically put together a very fun and random of shows including the one and only Aliyah Ice and Toby Pierce-McCrotch only to arrive a full hour early to the face of Ms Gay herself Electra Socket in full Drag.. she had forgotten to take the week off and was not going to go home now..
well it was going to be Myself the infamous Princess of Whales Jakyllyn Hyde, Impersonator extraordinaire Aliyah Ice, Spitfire Drag brother Toby Peirce-(McCrotch) and the Straight-Shooting Trailer-Chic comedy of Electra Socket (P.S. apparently Electra loves Jagger). Thankfully we all bring different talents to our art and put them to good use pulling off one of the best shows I've been apart of in a very long time (Where are you Ryann Ginger :( )...

Here take a look at some highlights.. any questions? lol

Jakyllyn Hyde's the "Origin of Love"

Electra "Drives All Night" to find the Light

a TOUGH act to follow Toby Pierce

Aliyah Ice takes the crowd to Church

Jaky closes the show out with Taylor the Latte Boy (my tits broke that bra!)

4) REMEMBER YOUR WORDS

The art of Verbal illusion is an extremely difficult and lengthy process, we expect you to do the work and learn any NEW material however after a while it does get overwhelming. I would never expect anyone to truly learn and memorize every lyric to all of their catalogued previous numbers forever. If you did the work in the beginning and worked on the exercises (included in "How to Succeed in my Shoes Without Even Trying), you should have the ability and resources to reorder this information. Before a show take a moment to reflect on the song, listen and re-absorb the lyrics and movement. It is important you know the words. Nobody thinks you are actually singing but it is our job to come as close to this illusion as possible, you must at least attempt to learn your words and if all else fails, leave it until next time and try a different number.
